Mathematics Professor from Hannover Among the
Hundred Best Scientists in the World

Prof. Joachim Escher of the Leibniz Universität Hannover Gains a Top Position in International Ranking

Foto: Prof. Joachim Escher A huge success for the Faculty of Mathematics and Physics of Leibniz Universität Hannover: Prof. Joachim Escher from the Institute of Applied Mathematics and Dean of the faculty has succeeded in being placed among the top hundred of the international ranking “ Essential Science Indicators”. The 45-year-old has place 90 and is thus ahead of many well-known scientists. His current work on modelling water waves is of great importance, particularly for understanding the decisive processes in a Tsunami.

The ranking is one of the most important barometers for the perception among international scientists of research work. It compares researchers and research institutions all over the world and places them in an international order of priority. The standard applied is the number of publications and quotations within the past 10 years. Whoever occupies one of the front positions in this comparison can consider themselves to be one of the true experts in their field.

In the field of mathematics the current ranking contains only six scientists from Germany among the first 100 of the roughly one million mathematicians considered. The scientist, who was born in Lörrach, has been Dean of the Faculty of Mathematics and Physics of Leibniz Universität Hannover since 2007. He has already taught and carried out research at the Universität Zürich, Université de Besancon in France, at the Universität Basel and the Universität Kassel. Since 2004 he has been co-editor of the SIAM Journal on Mathematical Analysis.

The fact that with Professor Escher a scientist from Hannover was able to obtain a position among the international elite provides confirmation of the current research evaluation of the Lower Saxony Science Commission (WKM), which certifies that the mathematical research at the Faculty of Mathematics and Physics of Leibniz Universität Hannover is very successful and that it has been able to sharpen its profile distinctly during the past few years
