Record Third-party Funds Raised
In 2008 the Leibniz Universität Hannover was more successful than ever in raising funds from public and private facilities.
In 2008 the Leibniz Universität Hannover was able to significantly increase funding received from industry and state funding facilities. So-called third-party funds reached a record value of 80 million euros which is 27 per cent more than the previous year. This increase is particularly due to research projects which are funded by the excellence initiative of the federal government and the federal states – the research clusters QUEST and REBIRTH. These and other projects are financed by the German Research Foundation (DFG) from which Leibniz Universität alone received 32 million euros – eight million more than in 2007 which corresponds to an increase of 34 per cent.
Leibniz Universität also received considerably more funding from the European Union. With eight million euros, funding was 55 per cent more than in 2007. The seventh EU research framework programme, the projects of which have now fully started work after a start-up phase, is also clearly noticeable here. Leibniz Universität was also able to raise funding direct from industry: around 14 million euros which represents an increase of 24 per cent. Remaining funding came from other third-party funds such as the Federal Ministry of Education and Research and other foundations. “This success is evidence of the fact that there is increasingly excellent teaching and research at our university,” says University President Prof. Erich Barke. The positive development in third-party funding shows, for example, the excellent results of co-operations with regional industry.
Third-party funds are funds which are raised from public and private sources in addition to the regular university budget to promote research and development as well as new scientific talent and teaching. Third-party funds can be awarded to the university, its facilities or individual scientists. In the most recent ranking of the Federal Statistical Office for third-party funding, in 2006, the Leibniz Universität Hannover came in the top section. The university came 11th place nationally. There is currently not a more recent ranking.
