Equal Opportunities Award
For the third time in a row Leibniz Universität Hannover has been chosen to receive the Total E-Quality award for gender equality at Universities
Leibniz Universität Hannover has once again been chosen to receive the Total E-Quality award for its gender equality projects. The award, which is sponsored by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research as well as the Ministry for Family, Senior Citizens, Women and Youth, is presented by the association Total E-Quality Deutschland e.V. to Universities that place particular emphasis on gender equality in their facilities. This is the third year in a row that Leibniz Universität has been one of the universities to receive the award. The award is valid for three years each time.
Professor Erich Barke, President of Leibniz Universität, who will accept the award on July 22nd, 2009 in Munich, is very pleased about this repeated success: “Gender equality is a mark of the quality of Leibniz Universität, just like our successful measures in youth development and family policy. I am happy that our endeavours have been honoured with the Total E-Quality award for the third time.“
The jury praised the areas of research, teaching and studies in particular as being especially positive. In their evaluation the jury said that “successful projects such as ‘Mentoring for Women in Science and Business’ have been continued in the areas of career and personnel development and new programmes such as ‘FiMINT – Science Careers for Women in the ‘MINT’ subjects’ added. The establishment of an AG limited company with the aim of consolidating gender research at the faculty for mechanical engineering fits very well into the concept of Leibniz Universität Hannover to motivate women to begin careers in the ‘MINT’ subjects and to support them in the same“. The ‘MINT’ subjects include mathematics, information technology, natural sciences and technology.
Leibniz Universität Hannover has been supporting the process of achieving gender equality in research, teaching and administration since the 1980s with a multitude of advancement programmes and projects. They range from mentoring programmes through to childcare facilities or the autumn University for schoolchildren through to doctorate courses and the affirmative action programme for women that has been in place since 1997.
