NTH chair passes to Leibniz Universität Hannover

President Professor Dr.-Ing. Erich Barke chair of Niedersächsische Technische Hochschule Board for two years

Bild: NTH-Übergabe The objective behind establishing the Niedersachsen Institutes of Technology (Niedersächsische Technische Hochschule, NTH) – an alliance between the Technische Universität Braunschweig, Clausthal University of Technology and Leibniz Universität Hannover – on 1 January 2009 was to promote cooperation not competition. Four years later, the chair will now be passed to Leibniz Universität Hannover for the first time. The previous chair of the NTH Board, Professor Dr. Thomas Hanschke, President of Clausthal University of Technology, handed over his office to the President of Leibniz Universität Hannover, Professor Dr.-Ing. Erich Barkeim, at a ceremony held in Clausthal. As such, NTH celebrates its second rotational handover. Professor Dr.-Ing. Jürgen Hesselbach, President of the Technische Universität Braunschweig, held the office of NTH Board chair from 2009 to 2011.

Numerous guests attended the ceremonial handover of the office, held in Clausthal University of Technology’s Aula Academia. The new chair of the NTH Board, Professor Barke, announced that the aim was now to keep the ship on course for the anticipated evaluation in 2015 or 2016. In collaboration with the state parliament, the NTH Board wishes to – and must – decide whether it should set sail to distant shores in its present state, or whether it would perhaps be better to moor the ship in the harbour again for a general overhaul. President Barke continued: “In any case, I shall do my very best to ensure that the ship no longer bobs up and down in shallow waters. Incidentally, of course, a number of colleagues with outstanding projects are living proof that one can by all means drill deep in shallow waters.”

The main reason for establishing NTH four years ago was to encourage the three participating universities to coordinate their course planning for the natural and engineering sciences, thus combining their existing strengths to enhance efficiency in research and teaching. The three member universities’ existing potential was to be enhanced, enabling individual institutions to sharpen their profiles by coordinating their key areas, particularly in the field of research. In the field of teaching, the aim was to create a greater degree of lateral mobility for students, making the range of courses even more attractive. A further aim was to achieve greater autonomy in the universities, for example giving them a greater say in appointment matters.
That said, NTH has a very limited budget. The Ministry for Science and Culture promotes the enhanced collaboration, providing annual funding of 5 million euros for the first five years, i.e. up to the end of 2013.
