Leibniz Universität Hannover
receives 1 million euros DAAD funding
Successful achievement in the “Strategic Partnerships and Thematic Networks” programme
As of 1 March 2013, Leibniz Universität Hannover will receive 1 million euros funding over a period of four years from the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF), awarded by the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD). With its successful application, submitted by the International Office in collaboration with the President’s Office and faculties, the University managed to assert itself, despite strong competition, in the new DAAD programme “Strategic Partnerships and Thematic Networks.” Forty of the 117 universities that expressed an interest in the programme were invited to submit a full application. 21 of these universities ultimately received funding.
With the DAAD’s support, Leibniz Universität Hannover intends to further expand and develop its long-standing strategic partnership with Saint Petersburg State Polytechnic University (SPbSPU), Russia. The objectives, adopted jointly by the two universities under the leadership of the International Office in a workshop, concern academic teaching, research and continuing education alike: emphasis is placed, for example, on establishing further joint double degrees, promoting young scholars, combining research projects and creating research consortia. Five of the University’s nine faculties (the Faculties of Mechanical Engineering, Civil Engineering and Geodetic Science, Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, Mathematics and Physics, and Economics and Management) and the Centre for Applied Linguistics and Special Languages are currently involved in the cooperation.
“I am delighted about this great success,” enthused President Erich Barke. “It shows that, with our internationalisation strategy, we have laid a foundation that now helps us to convince partners such as the DAAD of our objectives, generating crucial external funding for our work.”
“The strategic partnership with Saint Petersburg State Polytechnic University is desired at all levels and supported at all levels: students, doctoral students, professors, faculties, the International Office, the University Management,” added Dr. Birgit Barden, Head of the International Office. “This application is a result of successful teamwork. One of the most important and longest-standing cooperation agreements in one of our key regions can be further expanded and secured.”
Internationalisation is high on the agenda at Leibniz Universität Hannover: there are cooperation agreements all over the world for research and teaching as well as for student exchanges. Some 3,000 of the approximately 21,000 students come from abroad. Visiting scholars from abroad enrich the research and teaching landscape, and the introduction of international double degrees and degree courses taught in English contribute towards the internationalisation of the courses on offer.
