I will speak on the recent development in representation theory of symmetric groups and related Hecke algebras which began with a discovery, joint with Brundan, of an explicit isomorphism between the group algebra of the symmetric group and the newly defined algebras of Khovanov-Lauda and Rouquier (KLR algebras). The latter algebras are graded, and they provide many new viewpoints on classical questions of representation theory.
