The original twistor construction of Roger Penrose provided an algebro-geometric description of self-dual 4-manifolds. In the intervening years, there are appeared twistorial descriptions of many other differential-geometric objects. A particularly nice class of self-dual Einstein metrics has been constructed by Hitchin. These metrics have relations with several areas of mathematics: Poncelet polyogons, Painlevé equations, isomonodronomic deformations and, mysteriously, hyperbolic monopoles. It turns out that this last relation is a consequence of a new type of geometry on the moduli space of hyperbolic monopoles. This geometry leads then to a construction which provides many new examples of self-dual manifolds. |
