Leibniz Universität Hannover has set up its own innovative organisational structure to promote interdisciplinary research and competitive priority research areas. Consisting of research initiatives, research centres and Leibniz research schools, the system enables scientists to pursue cutting-edge research across traditional subject and faculty boundaries.

This structured system provides a variety of funding and institutional opportunities catering for the different stages of development of the interdisciplinary research projects.

Leibniz Research Initiatives

At the first developmental stage of the system, individual working groups form research initiatives to investigate clearly formulated and extensive research topics across traditional subject and faculty boundaries.

At the second stage, the research activities carried out in research centres are characterised by a high degree of international and scientific visibility; they regularly undergo an external review process and cooperate with external research institutions.

At the highest stage, Leibniz research schools provide a flexible structure for cross-faculty research at the highest international level. They are of limited duration and involve a particularly high degree of organisation and far-reaching autonomy.
