Research Centre
Centre for Biomolecular Drug Research
The Centre for Biomolecular Drug Research (German: Zentrum für biomolekulare Wirkstoffe, BMWZ) is a centre established by the governing body of the Leibniz Universität Hannover which is currently run by nine working groups from the fields of chemistry and biology.
Through its goal-orientated interdisciplinary basic research jointly with external partners from the field of clinical and application-orientated research an overall concept of drug research in lower Saxony is to be realised. The close cooperation which already exists with working groups from the Hannover Medical School, the University of Veterinary Medicine Hannover and the Helmholtz Centre for Infection Research (HZI) in Braunschweig permits the development of a research group which is unique in Germany.
The strengthened application for outside funding is to be given more emphasis through the interdisciplinary orientation of the BMWZ. The joint use and extension of the existing equipment pool and the furthering of the exchange of information and specialist knowledge are an important basis for this.
In addition, the training and support of young scientists is of particular interest to the BMWZ. In this connection, two newly accredited courses of study have already been created which reflect the interdisciplinary character of the BMWZ:
-
Bachelor's/Master’s degree course in Life Science
-
Masterstudiengang Wirk- und Naturstoffchemie
Master’s degree course in drug and natural substance chemistry
Research activities of the Centre for Biomolecular Drug Research
Gathering together and promoting chemically and biologically orientated drug research in the following fields:
-
Infection research
-
Anti-tumour research
-
Development of new types of test systems
-
Isolation, identification and synthesis of new drugs
