New Insights into Nanoscale Electronics

Researchers of QUEST (Centre for Quantum Engineering and Space-Time Research) at Leibniz Universität Hannover, Germany, and University of Geneva, Switzerland, have gained new insights into the quantum mechanical behavior of a nanoscale single-electron transistor, a so-called quantum dot.

Atoms, the building blocks of nature, can be used as extremely precise measurement devices. There is a fundamental limit called shot noise limit, by which the frequency of atoms cannot be determined to arbitrary precision. Researchers at the Cluster of Excellence QUEST now report in the journal Science that they have overcome this shot noise limit.

An Important Step Towards Quantum Computers

A team of scientists at the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) in Boulder, USA, has managed to entangle ions using microwave fields for the first time. The team has implemented a method that could be important for the realization of an integrated quantum computer with trapped ions.

Oyster Mushrooms Lower Cholesterol Level A study by the Institute of Food Science and Human Nutrition at Leibniz Universität reveals that regular consumption of oyster mushrooms can have a positive influence on the blood fat level. The study headed by Prof. Dr. Andreas Hahn and Dr. Inga Schneider was supported by the Lower Saxony Ministry of Science and Culture as a sub-project of the Research Association of Agricultural and Nutritional Science (FAEN).
