Christmas in Rio de Janeiro

I will tell you a little bit of what happens at my family’s Christmas, back there in Brazil. Well, for us Christmas is the time to get together, to be with the ones we love. We are a very big family, with relatives living in different parts of the country, so at the end of the year everybody travels to Rio de Janeiro, where my 93 year old grandmother lives, to spend a few days together.

• Every participant must bring one present.
• The presents should not be expensive (max 5 EUR). This makes the game funnier, as with less money people tend to be more creative.
• All the presents must be wrapped up, and you can use the wrapping to give wrong clues about the present: putting a small item inside a big box, or using a wrapping paper from a store that doesn’t correspond to what’s inside, and so on.
• Before the game starts all presents should be placed on a table and the names of the participants should be written down and placed inside a bowl.
• The game starts by picking a name from the bowl. The first person drafted goes up to the table and chooses a present (you can take your time when choosing, and examine carefully each present, if you wish). The first player opens a present and shows it to everybody. Then he picks out another name from the bowl.
• The second player then chooses another present from the table. But after he opens it, he can decide to keep his present or to trade it with the present already opened. Then he picks another name from the bowl.
• Now the third player can decide to keep his present or to take whatever has already been opened. And this goes on until the last participant is drafted.
• So, trading presents is the fun of the game. You can choose what you like best, but someone can take that away from you later! But please, and this is VERY IMPORTANT, do not get attached to your present, or you will get upset if you lose it!

Advice: If in your family there are 2 kids and 2 adults, it’s good to have 2 presents for kids and 2 for adults, so we will have the correct amount of kids and adult presents.

So this is our idea of a fun Christmas, using gifts to play and not taking this too seriously!!

Weil die Familie von Marta Barcellos Rezende jedes Jahr größer wurde und es deshalb immer schwieriger wurde, alle mit dem richtigen Geschenk zu erfreuen, hat sich die Familie ein Spiel ausgedacht. Dabei geht es allerdings mehr um den Spaß als um das Geschenk selbst.

• Jeder bringt ein Geschenk im Wert von maximal fünf Euro mit. Das kann etwas Lustiges, Nützliches oder auch etwas komplett Überflüssiges sein.
• Jedes Geschenk muss verpackt sein. Dabei können falsche Hinweise auf den Inhalt zum Beispiel durch die Wahl einer riesigen Verpackung für etwas Winziges gegeben werden.
• Bevor das Spiel beginnt, werden alle Geschenke auf einen Tisch gelegt und alle Namen der Mitspieler auf kleine Zettel geschrieben und diese in ein Gefäß getan.
• Ein Mitspieler beginnt, in dem er einen Namen zieht. Diese Person darf sich als erstes ein Geschenk von dem Tisch aussuchen, er öffnet es und zeigt es allen Mitspielern. Danach zieht er einen neuen Namen.
• Der zweite Spieler sucht sich wieder ein Geschenk aus, öffnet es und kann nun entscheiden, ob er das Geschenk behält oder mit dem bereits geöffneten tauscht. Der andere muss das Geschenk dann hergeben.
• So geht es weiter. Die nächsten Spieler können immer wieder entscheiden, ihr Geschenk zu behalten oder es gegen ein bereits Geöffnetes zu tauschen.
• Jeder sucht sich aus, was er am liebsten hätte, es kann ihm aber auch wieder genommen werden. Daher ist es wichtig, sich nicht zu sehr über ein Geschenk zu freuen, denn es kann noch weggetauscht werden.
• Nachdem alle Geschenke geöffnet sind, darf der erste Spieler noch einmal tauschen, da er am Anfang noch keine Auswahl hatte.
