Description of the Subject

There are only few professions which influence people and their environment as directly as architecture does. It is impossible to imagine living, working, learning, culture and leisure without the corresponding buildings. These have to be suitable for their purpose, fit in with their surroundings and people’s expectations, shelter their users from the negative effects of the world outside and protect natural resources during the building process and afterwards.

Understanding planning procedures and forms of participation is as much a requirement of the profession as a basic knowledge of land use and development plans, urban, district, village and neighbourhood development as well as urban and district renewal.

The task of architects is to bring all these very different aspects together in the design. Even with far reaching expertise this cannot however be solved by architects alone. They must be ready, willing and able to work together with different experts. Coordination of these specialised areas of planning is often as important as their own design activity.
