Content and Structure of Degree Courses

Profile of Degree Courses

The partnership between science and creativity is the most important incentive for studying landscape architecture and environmental planning, and is a significant feature of the subject. What is more, special emphasis is placed on cooperation with other disciplines.

Studies are organised in projects. Work on specific projects trains the skills required to solve problems in teams. This method of working reinforces those qualities which are essential for professional success, such as media and presentation skills and assertiveness, thus helping personal development.

Course Length

  • Prescribed length of study: 6 semesters

Course Content

Right from the beginning of the bachelor’s degree course, students take part in foundation courses in elements of natural and social sciences, engineering, planning and design relevant to landscape architecture and environmental planning. Studies are organised in projects, become progressively more challenging from the first to the fifth semester.

The first and second semesters provide an overview of the essentials of the bachelor’s programme. Participation in the first two projects and the compulsory modules lays the foundation for scientific-creative working and team work. In the third and fourth semesters, the compulsory modules cover more advanced subject matter and methods, which are then applied and tested in the projects. The target is to develop a deeper, scientific understanding of landscape architecture and environmental planning. In the sixth semester, the Bachelor’s thesis is completed, amongst other things.

From the fourth semester onwards students can select compulsory subject options from a wide range of topics (for example structural engineering in landscape architecture, presentation methods in landscape architecture, computer-assisted planning, preservation of historical gardens, regional development, forest ecology and forest planning, urban planning). Field trips are an important part of the course.

Examination Regulations

Degree courses are subject to certain rules and regulations.
This is essentially a question of regulating the contents e.g. compulsory/ optional subjects, as well as providing information on examination procedures.

Practical Training

Before embarking on the course, students are expected to gain 16 weeks of practical experience in a company. Evidence of this must be produced before registering for the exam of the project module in the fourth semester. It is thus possible for students to complete this during their studies. The aim of this pre-sessional internship is to provide a general taste of the profession.

Study Abroad

It is possible to spend a study period at a foreign university, for example within the framework of the EU Erasmus Programme.
