Profile of Degree Courses

More than in many other courses devoted to materials science, the course in materials chemistry and nanochemistry at Leibniz Universität Hannover focuses on the acquisition of principles both of materials chemistry and of physical chemistry as the basis of all aspects of materials science or production technology. Through the integration of different scientific disciplines, students are introduced to the interdisciplinary method of working in materials chemistry and nanochemistry.

Course Length

  • Prescribed length of study: 4 semesters

Course Content

Students learn about the organic or inorganic chemical aspects of the synthesis of materials and nanostructures; the classes of materials dealt with in the course range from metals, semiconductors and ceramics to polymers and modern hybrid materials. As an essential part of the course, methods for the qualitative and quantitative analysis of materials and for characterising their essential physical-chemical properties are presented and applied. A further important part of the course, which is covered mainly in interdisciplinary lectures and classes, involves the determining of application profiles for the materials. With the master’s degree, graduates thus acquire not only the scientific competence to address issues of materials chemistry, but also the ability to work in a team with for example physicists or engineers to tackle complex issues and to present their scientific results in a critical and convincing way.

Examination Regulations

Degree courses are subject to certain rules and regulations.
This is essentially a question of regulating the contents e.g. compulsory/ optional subjects, as well as providing information on examination procedures.

Practical Training

Industrial experience outside the university is not required. The course includes several periods of internal practical training.

Study Abroad

Optional. It is possible to spend a study period at a foreign university, for example within the framework of the EU Erasmus Programme.
