ForWind is the joint Centre for Wind Energy Research at the Universities of Bremen, Oldenburg and Hannover. As a scientific centre, ForWind combines the wind energy research activities of the three universities into a broad spectrum in the areas of physics and engineering. ForWind conducts fundamental research into wind energy, provides scientific support for industry-oriented projects and organises the education and further education of future specialists. The Gigawind research group, in which the five institutes in Hannover are involved, concentrates on the support structure and economic assessment of offshore wind farms.

A professorship for wind energy technology has been set up in the Faculty of Civil Engineering and Geodetic Science at the Leibniz Universität Hannover, who also runs the Fraunhofer Institute for Wind Energy and Energy System Technology (IWES) in a dual role.
