Kurzbeschreibung
The two year MSc programme “European Master in Territorial Development” (EuMiTD) is intended for graduates in relevant academic disciplines (for example, urban and regional planning, environmental planning, or geography) who would like to acquire in-depth knowledge for the strategic and sustainable development of urban and rural areas in Europe. This is achieved by focusing (1) urban and regional, transport and environmental planning in a European context, and (2) examining the impacts of EU regional policies and other sectoral policies on territorial development in the EU member states.
EuMiTD is based on active learning approaches, including 1) the combination of lectures and independent, group-based work from students; and 2) the combination of theoretical issues and practical applications. This also embraces the active involvement from practitioners – for example, senior planning experts from public planning associations – in the courses, either as lecturer or through field trips. This knowledge is further deepened in student projects which are a central element in EuMiTD. The student projects – focusing, for example, on comparisons of national housing policies or of national and regional policies to reduce land development – are of particular relevance as they emphasize ‘learning by doing’, meaning that students, in a self-directed and self-organized process, identify problem situations, analyze them, design solutions and evaluate them.
As of winter semester 2020/21 it is no longer possible to apply for this Master's programme, as the programme will be discontinued. It is planned to integrate the existing English-language contents of the programme into the Master's programme in Environmental Planning provinding for a major in Territorial Development. The EuMiTD devotes the first two semesters to the understanding of how an integrative and sustainable development of cities and regions can be achieved in a European context. The different courses address spatial planning and territorial development from a comprehensive and integrated perspective, complemented by lectures and seminars on landscape planning and environmental global challenges, transport planning or land and tenure policy. Moreover, strong emphasis is put on EU regional and rural policies (European Regional Development Fund, European Social Fund, etc.), their spatial impacts and key achievements or failures.
The third semester is spent abroad at one of our partner universities: University of the West of England (ENG), Stockholm University (SWE), Tours University (FRA), Wageningen University (NED) or the University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences Vienna (AUT) to enable students to understand and resolve complex planning problems within an international context. The fourth semester is dedicated to the master thesis which, ideally, should be supervised by one supervisor from Leibniz Universität Hannover and one supervisor from one of the partner universities.

Bachelor degree in a field of study closely related to that of the Master programme (e.g. geography, urban planning, regional planning, territorial development, landscape and environmental planning, transport planning), Adequate knowledge (Level B2) of the English language.
- Students will qualify for the following professional fields:
- Positions in regional and local planning authorities in European countries
- Positions in national authorities/ministries
- Positions in associations or consultancies that have an international expertise (e.g. in EU funding, cross-border development etc.)
- Positions in EU authorities and European planning and development agencies
- University and non-university research and development in the European context
Zugangsvoraussetzungen
Please note that an application folder must be submitted for the application in addition to the regular application documents. The application folder includes a motivation letter as well as work samples (DIN A4 format).
For master''s degree programmes with restricted admission, places shall be allocated according to the university’s own selection procedure, if there are more applicants fulfilling the admission requirements than there are places available. The exact admission requirements can be found in the admission regulations:
There is no minimum grade / entry grade for the Master''s application. Notwithstanding the currently valid admission regulations for Master''s programmes, the minimum grade of 3.0 is no longer applied. The admission regulations will be revised in this regard.
