Micromechanics of heterogenous materials: homogenization approaches for material modelling

The constitutive behaviour of materials is highly affected by the multiscale arrangement of their constituents, and methods for incorporating microscale properties at the macroscale allow to gain a deep insight for the design and engineering analysis of structures and devices. Upscaling techniques from heterogeneous microstructures to quasi-homogeneous properties at the macroscale are based on two complementary approaches: analytical and computational methods.

This lecture discusses homogenization approaches for the constitutive modelling of heterogenous materials. A brief and general overview both of theoretical bases for analytical approaches and of numerical schemes for computational micromechanical descriptions will be addressed. Strengths and limitations of different methods will be provided. These will allow to trace guidelines for finding the optimal balance between fidelity and efficiency as function of different final applications. Open research challenges will conclude the course.
