European Structural Funds

As part of its cohesion policy, the European Union (EU) aims to strengthen economic, social, and territorial cohesion in Europe, as well as to harmonise different levels of development in different regions. The key financial instruments to achieve these objectives are summarized in the European Structural and Investment Funds (ESIF). ESIF contributes to the implementation of the Europe 2020 strategy for smart, sustainable, and inclusive growth in Europe.

As part of its regional policy, the State of Lower Saxony's Operational Programme (OP) identifies four priority areas in which the funds will be used in the funding period 2014 to 2020:

  • Innovation and research
  • Competitiveness of SMEs
  • CO2 reduction and climate protection
  • Regional development
