International doctorate

The Welcome Centre is the central point of contact for international doctorates, who are doing a research stay or their full doctorate at Leibniz University Hannover.

We also support the internationalisation of the doctorate through our consulting services for all doctoral candidate from LUH, who are interested in doing a research stay abroad and the implementation of binational doctorate (Cotutelle) at LUH.

COTUTELLE/DOUBLE DEGREE FOR DOCTORAL CANDIDATES

Doctorates can be completed entirely at Leibniz Universität Hannover or at a university abroad. Doctoral candidates who complete the programme successfully will be awarded a degree that is conferred by two universities - a jointly supervised doctoral programme, also known as a cotutelle. This procedure is particularly suitable for doctoral candidates focusing on international topics who are jointly supervised by academic staff at another international university.

  • Cotutelle Agreements

For this purpose, an individual agreement outlining the framework of the programme must be concluded.

The agreement must comply with the doctoral regulations of both universities. If necessary, the agreement must be adapted to accommodate the individual interests of both universities and the doctoral candidate. The agreement must cover the entire doctoral process, from enrolment to the graduation ceremony.

Once the agreement has been approved by both universities, the agreement must be signed by university management, the deans of the involved faculties, the supervisors, and the doctoral candidate.

  • Cotutelle – Funding opportunities

Cotutelles usually include a research visit at the partner university. If you wish to receive funding, you should apply in time. Cotutelle students can apply for a research mobility grant. In addition, they have access to specific funding programmes designed for double doctoral programmes.

    DAAD
The German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) awards grants for international doctoral candidates, who are doing a double degree with a german university.

    Funding opportunities for specific countries
The Université franco-allemande (DFH-UFA) awards mobility grants to doctoral candidates and supervisors involved in cotutelles with French universities.

  • Cotutelle – Database

In this database, you will find all the partner universities, whom LUH already has a general or an individual cotutelle agreement with. These agreements can be used as sample or basis for new agreements.
