Funding
Funding Provided by the Graduate Academy
The Graduate Academy awards grants to doctoral candidates at Leibniz University Hannover to support them at an early stage of their doctoral studies (Exposé Scholarship). The maximum funding period is 6 months.
DAAD Grant
The Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) awards scholarships to international doctoral candidates who wish to pursue doctoral studies in Germany. Grants are initially awarded for one year. An extension may be requested every year, however, the maximum funding period is 4 years.
Generally, doctoral candidates must submit their application from their home country. Doctoral candidates who have already stayed in Germany longer than 15 months are not eligible to apply.
Doctoral Grants and Other Funding Opportunities
Many foundations award grants to German and international doctoral candidates. Among other criteria, the personality of the doctoral candidate is a decisive factor in the selection process. Award criteria may vary depending on the organisation that awards the grant.

Admission and enrolment
Formal admission to doctoral studies comprises two steps:
- 1. doctoral candidates must be accepted by the faculty.
- 2. doctoral candidates may enrol via the Admissions Office.

Enrolment for visiting doctoral candidates
If you will be staying longer than a semester
Doctoral candidates who will be staying in Hannover for one or two semesters may enrol as visiting doctoral candidates.
In order to enrol, please complete the following steps:
- A confirmation signed by the dean's office as a visiting doctoral candidate at your faculty.
- After obtaining the signed confirmation, enrolment takes place via the online form of the Admissions Office.
- After receiving the PDF of the online form, print it out and hand it in together with the other listed documents to the Admission Office in the ServiceCenter.
If you will be staying less than a semester
A visitor’s pass can be obtained from the International Office, which can be used to:
- proof that you are a member of Leibniz University Hannover
- benefit from staff discounts at the cafeteria
- access the library
- book courses at University Sports Centre

Completion grants
Funding Provided by the Graduate Academy
The Graduate Academy awards grants to doctoral candidates at Leibniz University Hannover to support them in the final stages of completing their doctoral thesis (Completion Grant). The maximum funding period is 6 months.
Funding Provided by the International Office
International doctoral candidates who are in the final stages of their doctoral thesis at Leibniz Universität can apply for a final grant. Grants will be awarded on the basis of academic qualification and social needs (award guidelines). The funding from DAAD grants lasts between 4 and 6 months.
