HEALTH INSURANCE

Doctoral candidates are not required to have a health insurance to enroll to university. However, we strongly recommend getting health insurance for your stay in Germany. In Germany there are statutory and private health insurance providers. Please observe the following regulations:

  • as a rule, doctoral candidates are not eligible for insurance at student rates.
  • Doctoral candidates are eligible to take out statutory health insurance if they are already insured by a statutory health insurance during their Bachelor and Master studies in Germany or if their income exceeds € 450 per month.
  • In order to receive a residence permit from the foreigners' authority, your insurance provider must meet the service requirements of statutory health insurance providers (§11 Abs. 1-3 SGB V).
  • Germany has concluded social security agreements with all EU countries, as well as with Turkey and Tunisia. Thus, citizens of the countries mentioned above can receive medical care whilst in Germany that is covered by the health insurance policy in their home country. Doctoral candidates intending to undertake paid employment in Germany (including internship) should chekc whether the health insurance in their home country covers this. Regulations may vary depending on the country.

Visiting doctoral candidates on short-term research visit, who are not eligible to enrol, are covered via the university's accident insurance, provided that they perfom similar tasks as regular members of staff. For this purpose, a form request must be submitted to the Personnel and Legal Department (Dezernat 2).
