Insurance

HEALTH INSURANCE

Doctoral candidates don't have toprove that they have a health insurance to enroll to university. Nevertheless, we highly recommend to contract a health insurance for your stay in Germany. In Germany, there are statutory and private health insurance providers. There specific regulations must be observed.

  • Doctoral students are not eligible for insurance at student rates.
  • Doctoral students are not eligible to take out statutory health insurance unless they already register during their Bachelor and Master studies in Germany or they have an income exceeding € 450 per months.
  • To be accepted by the Foreign Office for a residence permit application the health insurance must meet the service requirements of statutory health insurance providers (§11 Abs. 1-3 SGB V).
  • Germany has concluded social security agreements with all EU countries as well as with Turkey and Tunisia. This means that citizens of theses countries can receive medical care whilst in Germany that is covered by the health insurance policy in their country of origin. If you take up paid work (including internship), please check with your health insurance in your home country to see whether you still have insurance coverage. The regulations can vary from country to country.

Information sheet: Accident insurance at the University (in German)

ACCIDENT INSURANCE

All enrolled doctoral candidates and employees are insured by the university's accident insurance policy. The insurance proctetion start with the beginning of the enrollment or of the work contract and covers all activities that are connected to the doctorate.

The direct route between the university and the home is covered.

In the case of overseas visits, the insurance cover is only valid for events organised by a German higher education institute. Usually, only overseas stay that are organised and managed by a German higher education institute are recognised. Self-organised overseas visits, even if these are supported by the German higher eduction institute and are seen as necessary for the completion of the doctorate, are not covered by the insurance.

Visiting doctoral candidates who due to the shortness of their stay at LUH cannot be enrolled at the university, can still be covered by the university's accident insurance for the period of their stay, so long they are working in "similar ways" as employees. In this purpose, an application must be submitted to Dezernat 2.

LIABILITY INSURANCE

Personal liability insurance protects you in the event that you are responsible for physical insury of property damage of a third party (e.g. during laboratory work at the university). We therefore recommend taking out personal liability insurance.

If you have a personal liability insurance in your home country, please check if you are covered during your stay abroad.
