Fast Track to Tenure

Fast Track to Tenure

Leibniz Universität Hannover offers its researchers and academics an excellent and multi-faceted research environment. The university endeavours to promote excellent early-career researchers, recognise suitable professors at an early stage and ensure they remain at Leibniz Universität Hannover. In order to attract and retain excellent junior research group leaders, the option of a tenure-track professorship shall be offered.

Procedure

When a new junior research group is acquired via funding through the Emmy Noether Programme, ERC Starting & Consolidator grants, the Sofja Kovalevskaja Award or “Freigeist” Fellowships, the option of a tenure-track professorship should be assessed during the application process. This assessment of a potential tenure-track model should begin at an early stage, whilst drafting the application for third-party funding. In order to ensure that the head of the junior research group can be accommodated within the university and faculty core research areas, the tenure assessment must go through several coordination processes between the presidential board, faculty and institute. In addition, several parties within the university will provide advice and support to junior research group leaders with regard to applications, coordination of documents to be submitted (e.g. the declaration of the host institution), aspects of childcare and dual career options, as well as questions concerning residence in Hannover.

Applications for positions as head of a junior research group are personally submitted by the candidates to the funding organisations. Two to four years of postdoctoral research experience – often international - and early evidence of personal scientific excellence are usually required. A junior research group should not be located at the university where the applicant has been awarded their doctorate (exception: ERC grant).
