PhD Position (m/f/d) at the Databases and Information Systems Group

The Institute of Practical Computer Science invites applications for a PhD Position (m/f/d) at the Databases and Information Systems Group (Salary Scale 13 TV-L, “FwN”, 100 %) starting the next possible date. The position is limited for 3 years and offers the opportunity for a doctorate.

Our research group ( solves problems in the realm of heterogeneity of Big Data and as such works on topics, such as data integration, data discovery, data extraction, and data profiling. Furthermore, we are interested in designing database solutions for data science applications. Our group is affiliated with the Leibniz Center for Research L3S and the Berlin Institute for Foundations of Learning and Data (BIFOLD). Furthermore, we have vivid international collaborations with leading research institutions around the world.

Responsibilities and duties

The candidate will solve research problems independently and with guidance of the supervisor and support teaching. Research in our group requires you to

  • develop novel methods and algorithms for scalable data processing and data analysis,
  • formulate, describe, and present research results for publication at international venues and
  • conduct experimental analysis on large datasets.

Employment conditions

Applicants to the position must have a relevant scientific university degree (Diploma or Master), for example a M.Sc. in Computer Science (or closely related areas with strong focus on computer science). The candidate must have strong analytical and programming skills, a good command of the English language, and a genuine interest in designing, building and publishing innovative algorithms and systems. The candidate should have an outstanding background in databases and additionally in one of the following areas:

  • Machine Learning
  • Information Integration
  • Distributed Computing
