Doctoral Student (PhD, m/f/d) in Cosmology

(Salary Scale 13 TV-L, 75 %)

The Institute of Theoretical Physics (ITP) invites applications for the position of a Doctoral Student (PhD, m/f/d) in Cosmology (Salary Scale 13 TV-L, 75 %) starting September 2023. The position is limited to 3 years. The position contains some funds for travelling.

Responsibilities and duties

The successful applicant will be part of the newly established Emmy Noether research group dedicated to “probing the primordial universe with gravitational waves” led by Dr. Guillem Domenech. The new group is inside the “String Theory, Gravitation and particle physics” section currently composed of three other research groups led by Prof. Giulini (theoretical aspects of gravity), Prof. Lechtenfeld (string and quantum field theory) and Prof. Fuchs (particle physics beyond the standard model).

The successful applicant is expected to work with members of the group in the study of cosmological gravitational waves and/or related topics. The position is also accompanied by light teaching duties, in English or in German.

The Emmy Noether group will also keep close contacts with the Max Planck Institute for Gravitational Physics in Hannover, a.k.a. Albert Einstein Institute (AEI), which is next door to the ITP. The AEI in Hannover is very active in gravitational wave physics, both in astrophysics and in gravitational wave detectors (LISA and ET). There is the “Laser Interferometry and Gravitational Wave Astronomy” group led by Prof. Danzmann, the “Observational Relativity and Cosmology” group led by Prof. Allen and the “Binary Merger Observations and Numerical Relativity” independent group led by Dr. Ohme.

Employment conditions

Prerequisite for the employment is a scientific university degree in physics or mathematics.

The university aims to promote equality between women and men. For this purpose, the university strives to reduce under-representation in areas where a certain gender is under-represented. Women are under-represented in the salary scale of the advertised position. Therefore, qualified women are encouraged to apply. Moreover, we welcome applications from qualified men.
