PhD Student in health economics

 

The Institute of Health Economics (IHE) at Leibniz University Hannover welcomes applications for the following position, starting on 01 January 2027: PhD Student in health economics (salary scale 13 TV-L, 75 %)

The position is initially limited to two years, with the possibility of extension.

Responsibilities and duties 

Join a dynamic health economics research team! 

You will work on health economics research projects with a methodological focus on causal identification. You will independently carry out the preparation, validation and analysis of (large) datasets and support, where applicable, the planning, implementation and evaluation of economic (field) experiments.

You will present the results at national and international conferences and prepare them for publication in academic journals. You will work closely with colleagues within collaborative research projects and support the communication of research findings to the public. Furthermore, teaching students (e.g., giving tutorials, thesis supervision, seminar organization) is a central component of the position. The possibility of pursuing a doctorate is given and this is expressly encouraged.

Research environment 

The IHE is part of the Alliance of Health and Development Economics (AHeaD), a strategic alliance together with the newly founded Institute of Health and Development Economics at Leibniz University Hannover. Within the alliance, we offer excellent, research-oriented supervision of doctoral candidates with the active involvement of both institutes. You will find a vibrant, internationally oriented research environment with a strong peer group. The IHE's research focuses on the behaviour of suppliers and consumers in health markets, e.g. in the areas of prevention, competition, and regulation, as well as health services research.

In addition, the IHE is part of the Center for Health Economics Research Hannover (CHERH), which serves as a platform for interdisciplinary health economics research and interregional networking, particularly with the MHH. You will also participate in the doctoral programme of the Faculty of Economics and Management.

Who are we looking for?

Applicants must hold a university degree (Diploma/Master) in Economics, Health Economics, or a related field. 

We expect and welcome the following qualifications:

• Required are strong skills in quantitative empirical methods, ideally documented by an outstanding Master's thesis.
• Experience with statistical software (e.g. R, Python, or Stata) and in the analysis of large datasets is expected.
• Outstanding candidates demonstrate excellent social, personal, and communication skills.
• Candidates should have an interest in academic work and publishing, an independent and flexible work style, as well as team spirit and reliability.
• Very good proficiency in English and proficiency in German at a minimum level of B2 at the time of application are required.
• An interest in teaching is expected. Teaching experience (e.g. tutorials) is an advantage.
• We particularly welcome applicants with a research focus in health economics and an interest in health economics research questions.
