Financial Support for international Students

The International Office awards emergency grants ("Notfall-Beihilfen") and degree completion grants (“Studienabschlussbeihilfen”) to international students from non-EU countries who are currently enrolled at Leibniz University Hannover.

Emergency Grant ("Notfall-Beihilfe")

International students who are temporarily in an acute financial emergency through no fault of their own can apply for emergency aid. Applicants must be enrolled at Leibniz Universität Hannover and not be on leave of absence. As a rule, this allowance can only be granted once during the period of study. Exceptions are possible in cases of hardship, but must be justified separately.

The amount of the emergency grant depends on the type of emergency and the available funds.

Personal counselling is recommended before applying for emergency grant. Please direct requests for counselling to:

Degree Completion Grant ("Studienabschlussbeihilfe")

The Degree Completion Grant (“Studienabschlussbeihilfe”) aims to support international students at Leibniz University Hannover during their degree completion phase.

Personal counselling is recommended before applying for a degree completion grant. Please direct requests for counselling to:  HI-Beihilfe@zuv.uni-hannover.de.

  • How much is the Grant?

The awarding commission decides on the amount and duration of the grant for each applicant individually. It is based on the available funds, the number of applications and the neediness of the applicants. The grant is paid in monthly instalments and only during the writing of the thesis. The graduation grant is not a full scholarship and can only cover part of your monthly expenses.

  • What are the application requirements?

The degree completion grant is only awarded to foreign students (non-EU, residence permit §16.1) of the Leibniz University of Hannover. Applicants must be demonstrably registered for the final examination or submit a subsequent registration for the final examination within one month of the application deadline. Only complete applications will be accepted. Check whether you have submitted all the required documents.

  • Application deadlines

The degree completion grant is awarded four times a year. The application deadlines for the degree completion grant each year are:

    01-31 January

    01-31 March

    01-15 July

    01-31 October

  • Selection Interview

If your application is accepted, you will promptly receive an invitation to a personal interview with the Awards Committee. The interview lasts 20 to 30 minutes, during which you can explain your situation again in person. A few days after the interview, you will receive a decision on the amount and duration of your degree completion grant.
