Application process for International Exchange Students

Hero Image Hero Image Hero Image

A prerequisite for an exchange study program is an agreement between Leibniz University Hannover and the respective partner university.
The agreement has to contain exchange placements for the corresponding field of study. First of all, an application at the home university for a place in the exchange programme is necessary - the conditions of the home university apply. The resulting electronic nomination by the home university is a necessary basis for the further application process at Leibniz Universität Hannover. The nomination must be submitted by 30 April for the winter semester and by 31 October for the following summer semester.

Deadline for Application

for the Winter Semester 31 May | for the Summer Semester 30 November

Nomination and Online Application

  • Nomination by Home Institution

Please note that in order to apply for the exchange programme of Leibniz University Hannover, your home institution must approve your application first. You have to apply for a place in the exchange programme at your home institution first (applicants must meet the application requirements of the home institution). Your home institution must submit your nomination electronically by 30 April for the winter semester or by 31 October for the summer semester.

If you have any queries regarding the nomination process, please contact us here

  • Complete Online Application

After you have received confirmation of your nomination by us, complete the online application of the Leibniz Universität Hannover (LUH). After entering your details, you can double-check all information on the following page and make changes before submitting your application electronically.

Under " Desired stay - home country and institution" not all institutions are listed due to technical difficulties. If your institution is not available, please select any random other one and add your home institution under: “Institution, if not in the list.”

  • Submit Online Application

After submitting your application electronically, generate the PDF document of the application form.

Ensure that you have uploaded all required documents beforehand.

Detailed information on the additional documents can be found in the next section (Application Documents).

Application Documents

  • Application Form

Ensure you have uploaded all required documents. Your application will be sent to the relevant department where you will spend your exchange semester. These documents are crucial for the admissions decision.

  • Proof of Language Proficiency

For an exchange semester at Leibniz University Hannover, sufficient language skills must be demonstrated in your application. If you will be taking courses exclusively in English, we require official proof of language proficiency at level B2 (according to the CEFR). If you will be taking courses exclusively in German, proof of language proficiency at level B1 (according to the CEFR) is required. Exception: Exchange students in German Studies must provide proof of language proficiency at level B2.

Important: This must be official proof of language proficiency (e.g., TOEFL, Goethe Institute). Self-tests such as Duolingo are not accepted. If you do not have current proof of language proficiency, a certificate from your home university is sufficient (official document, not an email).

Native speakers of German or English do not need to upload proof of language proficiency.

If you are studying in English at your home university, you also do not need to submit separate proof of language proficiency.

Proof of language skills can also be provided via the Transcript of Records, but the language level according to CEFR must be visible there.

  • Transcript of Records

Please submit a current Transcript of Records that lists completed courses and/or modules at your home institution.

  • Learning Agreement

We also need your Learning Agreement (preliminary course selection). Discuss your preliminary course selection with your home university and add the courses to Learning Agreement, part before mobility. Add the courses you will be taking at LUH in Table A. For the corresponding courses at your home university, please use Table B.

Do not fill in the "during mobility" section yet!

Only enter courses from the subject area for which you were selected during the nomination process. Example: If you were nominated by your home university for Mechanical Engineering at Leibniz University, then select only courses from the Mechanical Engineering subject area for your first Learning Agreement (before mobility).

    Course selection:
The current course catalogues are only available approximately one month before the start of the semester. Please consult the course catalogues from the previous year for guidance. After your arrival in Hannover, you can then update your Learning Agreement. More information on finding courses can be found under Course Selection. You can find the coordinator responsible for your subject at Leibniz University Hannover here. If you have any questions about the courses, please contact the responsible departmental coordinator. This coordinator will also review and sign the Learning Agreement as part of the admissions process. Therefore, please enter this person in your OLA.

Important: The Learning Agreement only needs to be signed by you and your home university when you apply. (The signature from LUH will be added later during the admissions process.)

    Research Projects:
Research projects can only be carried out and included in your Learning Agreement if you have found a supervisor at Leibniz University Hannover beforehand. Discuss this with your supervisor at LUH and your home university in advance. The topic and the number of ECTS credits must also be agreed upon beforehand.

    Erasmus Students:
Please use the system provided by your home university whenever possible. Ideally, you should use the Online Learning Agreement (OLA) or Digital Learning Agreement (DiLA). Otherwise, please use the Erasmus+ Learning Agreement below.

Students from Partner Universities, ISEP, KOSPIE:
If your university has not provided a Learning Agreement, please use the one below.
