Academic leave of Absence

A leave of absence / vacation semester is the official interruption of studies for one semester. During this time students are not entitled to attend courses and to provide course achievements.


Information on Academic Leave of Absence

  • Students who want to take a leave of absence must have a specific reason. One reason may be e.g. Illness, but also a semester abroad or a pregnancy or other personal reasons.
  • In order to to be granted a leave of absence, you must submit an application during the re-registration period (at the latest on the last day of the general lecture period.
  • In exceptional cases, a leave of absence is also possible up to one month after the beginning of the semester (If the last day falls on a weekend, the following working day counts). For further information, please contact the Admissions Office.
  • The application must be accompanied by proof of your justification (medical certificate, copy of the maternity record, etc.).
  • Leave of absence semesters are counted as university semesters but not as subject-related semesters. 
  • Please use the leave of absence form ("Beurlaubungsbogen" - German Language only) for the application and submit this application at Admissions Office in the ServiceCenter.
