The Master of Science programme 'International Horticulture' is research oriented and well positioned to respond to the needs of actors in the horticultural sector throughout the world. Fruits, vegetables, flowers and trees – improving their quality, yield, economic performance and their eco-friendly cultivation are the domain of horticultural scientists.
The programme’s main research areas range from molecular plant breeding and plant architecture modeling to biotechnology, crop production and horticultural value chains to the economics of crop production and market research. According to the major of choice, the programme is taught excusively in English or German.

The standard course duration of the M.Sc. International Horticulture is four semesters, starting October 1 of the winter semester. Students specialize in one of the above listed majors. According to their interests, students choose one out of four majors, which will considerably influence the research project during the course of the programme.
Planning of the research project starts at the beginning of the first semester and the research proposal is presented subsequently during colloquia. In parallel to research,students take compulsory and elective courses.
Apart from natural science or economics courses, students are offered courses supporting their future leadership, such as ethics, management, intercultural communication, as well as language courses.
Interest in fundamental research in the field of plant science are expected.
Graduates work in numerous fields of natural sciences, engineering and economics. With a strong background in research, they take up leading positions in universities, national and international research agencies and international organisations.
Apart from research positions, graduates have found employment with banks, higher administration, government offices, NGOs, consulting firms and the global horticultural and agricultural industry.
As the horticultural sector is rapidly growing, employment opportunities will remain high in the future.
Admission Requirements
Applicants must have a Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.) or an equivalent degree in horticulture, biology, biotechnology, agriculture, economics or related fields.
For the majors Economics, Plant Production and Propagation and Plant Biotechnology, Physiology and Genetics English language level B2 is required.
Major in Plant Production and Propagation Requirements:
- 30 ECTS-LP in biology, chemistry, physics, math
- 30 ECTS-LP in plant production, plant nutrition, plant pathology, agricultural engineering
Major in Economics Requirements:
- 30 ECTS-LP in agricultural economy, macro-economics, industrial management, theory of markets
- 30 ECTS-LP in plant production, plant nutrition, plant pathology, agricultural engineering
Major in Plant Biotechnology, Physiology and Genetics Requirements:
- 30 ECTS-LP in biology, chemistry, physics, math
- 30 ECTS-LP in genetics, physiology, biotechnology, plant breeding
