Short Description
Due to the illegal, russian attack against Ukraine and the associated sanctions against Russia, all cooperation between the University of Hanover and Russian universities is currently on hold. This also affects the master degree programme „International Mechatronics“. Therefore, it is currently not possible to apply for this programme.
The modern world places a myriad of demands on products. To ensure the performance, safety and economy of a design, it is often necessary to combine traditional mechanical components with electronics and software. Mechatronics concerns the integration of mechanical, electrical, control and information-processing components. Since the emergence of mechatronics in the late 1960s, the interdisciplinary field has grown dramatically to become an essential part of modern engineering.
Leibniz University Hannover recognises the importance of the field and the corresponding opportunities. The University offers both bachelor’s and master’s degree courses in mechatronics and has developed the specialised Hannover Centre for Mechatronics (MZH) to further its research and teaching. In view of the international nature of mechatronics, a partnership with Saint Petersburg State Polytechnical University – a renowned technical university in Saint Petersburg, Russia – has recently been established. This partnership has enabled the creation of a new International Mechatronics master’s degree course.

International Mechatronics is a Double Degree Master study programme, which is offered in English language by Leibniz Universität Hannover, Germany in cooperation with Peter the Great St. Petersburg Polytechnic University, Russia. In St.Petersburg this programme is titled Intelligent systems. The 1st and 2nd semesters of this study programme take place in St. Petersburg and last from 1.September till 30. June. During this time students have to attend lectures, seminars, pass examinations at Peter the Great St. Petersburg Polytechnic University and achieve 60 credit points in approved courses. The 3rd and 4th semesters take place in Hannover and last from 1. October till 30. September of the following year. During the third semester students have to achieve further 30 credit points and write their master thesis in the fourth semester at Leibniz Universität Hannover. The final examination takes place at Peter the Great St.Petersburg Polytechnic University.

Students of Mechatronics should have the ability to use their imagination and to think in an abstract way. An understanding of technical matters, an interest in mathematics and the ability to think logically are also important. Mechatronics is a highly interdisciplinary field between Electrotechnics and Mechanical Engineering. For the Double Degree with St. Petersburg Polytechnic University a good grasp on programming skills is very helpful. Since studies take place in Russia and Germany a rudimentary understanding of both languages will help in your everyday routine.
After gaining expertise in one of the many advanced specialisations, graduates with a master’s degree in mechatronics are able to play an active role in the research and development of new products and systems in many different areas of engineering. Fields of employment range from the car, aeronautical and space industry, to media technology, medical and domestic engineering. Graduates of the International Double Degree in cooperation with the Saint Petersburg State Polytechnical University are ideally qualified to work in global engineering and commerce.
