Special pedagogical internship, taking into account the special needs education and the subject of instruction and a special pedagogical internship of at least four weeks each, must have been completed (compulsory).

Short Description

Mathematics is offered as a second subject (or supplementary teaching subject) within the master’s degree programme Special Needs Education for Schools. As first subject Special Needs Education is studied.

Students on the Master’s degree programme in Special Needs Education for Schools with the teaching subject of Mathematics develop and expand on the subject discipline and teaching methodological skills in mathematics gained at the Bachelor’s stage. Students earn a total of 120 credit points in the Master’s degree programme, 30 of which in the teaching subject of Mathematics. The mathematical content is based on the requirements of the Federal State of Lower Saxony. The courses on offer are aimed exclusively at students on the Master’s degree programme in Special Needs Education.

Course Structure

In the course of their practical training in the first semester, supported by teaching staff, students try out and practice teaching at a school. Courses on geometry and applied mathematics are offered in the subsequent semesters. In each case, these courses consist of lectures and problem classes.

The range of courses in the subject discipline is completed by advanced courses in teaching methodology, covering a broad spectrum of teaching methodological topics.

Recommended Abilities

Previous knowledge of mathematics, such as that taught in the Bachelor’s degree programme in Special Needs Education with the teaching subject of Mathematics. An interest in teaching others mathematics skills.

Career Opportunities

Graduates of this degree programme are entitled to embark on the preparatory phase of teacher training at a special school and/or integrative/inclusive school. In addition, graduates may also embark on an academic career, e.g. by pursuing a doctorate.

Former students work at schools and colleges, in continuing education and training. Apart from working in schools, Job opportunities can be in the area of special education work in early intervention, counseling, as well as disability, integration and family support.
