Molecular Microbiology
(Master of Science)

During the first semester of the programme, students are taught a basic knowledge of molecular microbiology in four compulsory modules. In these modules, students are introduced to current aspects of molecular biochemical microbiology, microbial cell biology, environmental microbiology and microbial chemistry in lectures and during laboratory classes. Compulsory elective modules that can be taken during the first three semesters enable students to gain special skills. Students can specialise in the area of basic research or in application-oriented research and development in the areas of microbial genetics and biochemistry, microbial cell biology, infection biology, virology, environmental microbiology, biotechnology, microbiological chemistry, active ingredients, and modern methods of molecular analysis. These are also the many areas in which students may undertake practical research training in the third semester. The fourth semester is set aside for preparing a Master’s thesis in one of these areas. The Master’s thesis is an aspect of current research in the relevant research group, creating a smooth transition to the later challenges faced in the everyday working environment of microbiologists.

• Completion of a Bachelor’s degree in a related subject, such as Biology, Life Science or Biochemistry, covering basic microbiology, molecular biology, chemistry and biochemistry.
• Applicants from abroad must prove that they have a suitable educational background that has been recognised as equivalent.
• An adequate knowledge of English. Nowadays, English is the language of science, in the literature and in international communication.

• Molecular biological development and analysis in the biotech industry
• Environmental analysis in agencies, authorities and companies, involving the tasks of microbiological analysis and control
• Basic research in life sciences at universities/higher education institutions and other research institutes, not only limited to the area of molecular biology and microbiology
• Research and development in all areas of medicine and in medical/pharmaceutical companies involved in life sciences
• Microbiological analysis and quality control in the food industry
