Short Description

History is offered as a second subject (or supplementary teaching subject) within the master’s degree programme Special Needs Education for Schools. As first subject Special Needs Education is studied.

With its school-based specialisation, the degree programme in Special Needs Education with History as a second subject at the History Department primarily offers practice-oriented training. The range of courses offered by the History Department covers the entire breadth of the subject of History, including the branches of Ancient History, Medieval History, Early Modern and Modern History / Contemporary History. Emphasis is placed on Modern History.

Geographically speaking, the focus is on Germany, Europe, Africa and Latin America. With regard to methodologies, the history of politics, societies, mentalities, cultures and gender take centre stage. The Department also attaches great importance to practice-oriented training.

In the Master’s programme, students learn about another period and select a methodological approach (global history, social history, cultural history, regional history, media / publicity / historical culture). Students also take a specialisation in teaching methodology and a practical module.

Course Structure

The study programme is grouped into four modules comprising one or two courses; each module ends with a module examination. The Master’s degree programme in Special Needs Education for Schools involves earning 30 credit points in the subject of History.

In the compulsory elective area, students must take a basic module on a period not addressed at the Bachelor’s stage or on one of the non-European areas of specialisation (Africa or Latin America). In addition, students specialise in a methodological approach (global history, social history, cultural history, regional history, media / publicity / historical culture). Both modules comprise two courses, and are worth 10 credit points each.

In the compulsory area, students expand on teaching methodology in a course within a module worth 5 credit points and take an additional course within the practical module (5 credit points).

Recommended Abilities

Students of the subject of History seeking to gain a teaching position in Special Needs Education at a school should not only be interested in issues relating to the individual (historical awareness and historical thinking) and social (historical culture) reception and production of history, but also in the specialist subject matter and specialist problems.

The challenges faced in the professional field of “special needs schools and teaching history” call for a great affinity for teaching children and young people with impairments. Rather than acting as “disciplinary specialists in school”, history teachers at special needs schools or in inclusive settings are responsible for developing teaching/learning arrangements that enable students to learn about history.

Career Opportunities

Graduates of this degree programme are entitled to embark on the preparatory phase of teacher training at a special school and/or integrative/inclusive school. In addition, graduates may also embark on an academic career, e.g. by pursuing a doctorate.

Former students work at schools and colleges, in continuing education and training. Apart from working in schools, Job opportunities can be in the area of special education work in early intervention, counseling, as well as disability, integration and family support.
