Short Description
German Studies is offered as a second subject (or supplementary teaching subject) within the master’s degree programme Special Needs Education for Schools. As first subject Special Needs Education is studied.
With regard to form and content, German Studies as a second subject on the Master’s degree programme in Special Needs Education for Schools builds on the knowledge and modules from the teaching subject of German at the Bachelor’s stage. The course focuses on relevant thematic areas from the fields of literary studies, linguistics and teaching methodology, which are expanded on taking into account the perspective of special needs education.
A special feature of German Studies as a second subject is the close cooperation between the Institute of Education for Special Needs and the German Department. After completing the compulsory modules, undertaken at the Institute of Education for Special Needs, students can choose between two areas of competence when taking compulsory elective modules: Competence Area A is offered by the German Department; the Institute of Education for Special Needs is responsible for Competence Area B. This enables students to select their areas of specialisation according to their objectives, benefiting from the expertise and specialist knowledge of teaching staff from both institutes.
In the Master’s degree programme, students are prepared for planning, delivering and evaluating lessons independently, as well as reflecting on them critically. After completing the degree programme, graduates may transfer to the preparatory phase of teacher training (teacher training period).

German Studies involves studying compulsory modules and compulsory elective modules worth a total of 30 credit points.
Students embark on the subject of German Studies in the 1st semester via the compulsory module Linguistic Analysis, which comprises a lecture and a specialisation seminar. In the 2nd semester, students take the compulsory module Forms and Aspects of Children’s and Youth Literature.
From the 2nd semester, students start taking compulsory elective modules. At this point, they decide whether they wish to pursue Competence Area A or Competence Area B.
Competence Area A comprises module D S Teaching Special Needs Education, S 6 Language Acquisition and Psychology of Language and S 7 Theory and Practice of German as a Foreign and Second Language, and as the Language of Education. Module D S is a compulsory module in Competence Area A; in addition, students choose freely between modules S 6 and S 7. Competence Area B comprises the module Language and Literature Teaching for Heterogeneous Learning Groups and the module German as a Second Language and as the Language of Education in Culturally Diverse Contexts. Both modules must be taken within Competence Area B.

Graduates of this degree programme are entitled to embark on the preparatory phase of teacher training at a special school and/or integrative/inclusive school. In addition, graduates may also embark on an academic career, e.g. by pursuing a doctorate.
Former students work at schools and colleges, in continuing education and training. Apart from working in schools, Job opportunities can be in the area of special education work in early intervention, counseling, as well as disability, integration and family support.
