Internationalisation at the rise at Indian higher education institutions – DAAD supports capacity development

What are the challenges in internationalisation of higher education in India? What are the duties of an international office? How can internationalisation be anchored in the structure of higher education institutions? These and many more questions were raised and discussed in the two-day workshop facilitated by DAAD in October 2019 at IIT Madras. Representatives from international offices of 28 Indian higher education institutions learned from best practices of German and Indian institutions and exchanged their experiences.

The workshop was conducted by the German experts, Dr Marcus Hoppe & Dr Balasubramanian Ramani from the International Office of the Leibniz University Hannover, Germany. The current policies and challenges in the internationalisation of Indian higher education were presented by Professor Sudhanshu Bhushan from the National Institute of Educational Planning. Further expert speakers came from IIT Madras, IISER Pune and Vellore Institute of Technology (VIT).

The interactive hands-on workshop with group activities was well received by the participants and gave a good insight into the international offices of German universities and their functioning. The presentations resulted in an extensive exchange of thoughts and discussions about the weaknesses and strengths of the participants’ home institutions and about their respective internationalisation strategies.

The workshop showed that internationalisation and international exchange as well as mobility are relevant to Indian institutions. The participants agreed to form a network including participants from other workshops organised by the DAAD New Delhi on the topic of internationalisation. The DAAD New Delhi will offer information to the network with regard to Indo-German cooperation possibilities. Considering that ‘Internationalisation in Higher Education’ is a very relevant topic in India at the moment, DAAD New Delhi intends to support the capacity development of Indian higher education also in the future.

The workshop was organised by DAAD under the DIES programme. The programme “Dialogue on Innovative Higher Education Strategies” (DIES) is jointly coordinated by the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) and the German Rectors’ Conference (HRK). It aims at improving the higher education management at the institutional level as well as aligning the higher education systems with the national and regional development goals so that universities in developing countries can emerge stronger and more international.
