Leibniz University Hannover Joins Scholars at Risk

Network supports threatened scholars

Leibniz University Hannover is now a member of Scholars at Risk, an international network of more than 500 higher education institutions in 41 countries dedicated to protecting threatened scholars and promoting scientific freedom. SAR member institutions assist persecuted scholars and students by providing temporary research opportunities, as well as by reporting and condemning attacks on higher education in order to protect academic freedom.

By joining Scholars at Risk, Leibniz University Hannover expresses solidarity with members of higher education communities around the world facing threats as a result of peacefully voicing ideas and asking questions. Academic freedom is crucial for providing high-quality academic education. As a SAR member, LUH demonstrates its commitment and responsibility to uphold and promote freedom of speech and research, both on a local and a global scale.

Among other things, the New York office of the global SAR network provides support with the placement of threatened scholars at host institutions, as well as with threat assessments for the Philipp Schwartz Initiative. LUH has already acted as a host for threatened scholars on two occasions.
