Knowledge in the city: anyone out and about in Hannover’s city centre can now find out about the academic work and activities of Leibniz University Hannover (LUH). LUH now has its own retail space right in the city centre at Niki-de-Saint-Phalle-Promenade 44c, to host exhibitions, events and much more. This will allow LUH to bring science to the people. At LEIBNIZ.MITTE, the university showcases current research that present possible solutions to pressing future issues, create new opportunities and have a meaningful impact on society.

Wednesday 5 August 2026, 2 pm - 4 pm
HorsePower Hannover - powered fully by electricity
The LUH Formula Student team and team leader Thomas Hofmann will present their project: HorsePower Hannover. LUH’s team comprises students from different disciplines, who work together to design racing prototypes, subsequently competing against other teams at international events. A racing prototype is currently on display at LEIBNIZ.MITTE.

Energy through science – energy research at LUH
The interdisciplinary Leibniz Research Center Energy 2050 (LiFE 2050) combines the expertise of 30 institutes at LUH. It focuses on energy system transformation, renewable sources and developing sustainable solutions. Dr. Volker Schöber – project manager – will present current projects. In keeping with the topic Energy through science, the exhibit will feature research from the fields: solar energy, wind energy, green hydrogen, the heating transformation, the electricity grid and aviation.

Einstein Elevator - Zero-gravity experiments
The Einstein Elevator is the result of interdisciplinary research and is one the large-scale instruments at the Hannover Institute of Technology (HITec). The large research instrument is a more developed version of a classic drop tower. Using a miniature of the 40-metre-high instrument, Christoph Lotz – head of the work group “Einstein Elevator” – will demonstrate how researchers at HIT conduct research and carry out their work.
In addition, the Leibniz Pop-up Shop will be open for three days with hoodies, T-Shirts and much more available to purchase. Each Wednesday (12th, 19th and 26th August), the Leibniz Pop-up Shop will be open from 10 am - 1 pm with a selection of LUH-designed merchandise from the Leibniz Shop.
The exhibits – Energy through science, the racing prototype, and the miniature of the Einstein Elevator – will also be on display in the shop window outside of opening hours; that way, the public can find out about the various research projects carried out at LUH.
The exhibits will be accompanied by a miniature version of the main university building ("Welfenschloss"). The model is constructed with colourful stones and captures the architecture of the historic building, including its towers and façades.
