Leibniz University Hannover has achieved excellent results in the latest Shanghai Ranking.

Leibniz University Hannover (LUH) has scored a major success in the latest Shanghai Ranking: it has placed first in Germany for the subject civil engineering. This means it has a global ranking of 76–100. The Faculty of Civil Engineering and Geodetic Science obtained points for the area of civil engineering particularly in the categories “world-class faculty”, “research impact” and “international collaboration”.

Overall, LUH was ranked in 14 subject categories within this year’s Shanghai Rankings and counts among the top 500 universities worldwide in terms of research strength. In addition to civil engineering, mechanical engineering also achieved an excellent ranking, placing among the top ten in Germany.

The Shanghai Ranking Consultancy publishes the annual Global Ranking of Academic Subjects (GRAS), which assesses universities’ research performance in 55 subjects. The ranking is based on publication data, such as the number of publications in major scientific journals and the proportion of publications produced in international collaborations, as well as prestigious research awards.

In its teaching and research, the Faculty of Civil Engineering and Geodetic Science focuses on three key areas: structural engineering, water and environment, and geodesy and geoinformatics. It is home to more than 2,200 students. Its acquisition of third-party funding for research has increased significantly in recent years and it ranks among the top three faculties at LUH in this respect each year. Its research infrastructure includes the Large Wave Flume (GWK+), one of the largest accessible wave flumes worldwide.

The Faculty of Mechanical Engineering has more than 3,000 students, about a third of whom come from abroad. It is the LUH faculty with the highest level of external funding. In addition to classical mechanical engineering, the range of courses also includes subjects such as sustainable engineering, optical technologies and biomedical engineering. All of the faculty's institutes are located in close proximity to each other at the Mechanical Engineering Campus in Garbsen, facilitating academic cooperation as well as cooperation with businesses and start-ups.
