Silent Night at Leibniz University Hannover

Switch off and unwind over the Christmas holidays!

Approximately 100 million kilowatt hours (kWh) of electricity and district heating were consumed at Leibniz University Hannover (LUH) in 2017. Electricity consumption in the university buildings alone amounted to more than 60,300 megawatt hours (MWh) - which is the equivalent of the annual consumption of approximately 13,600 four-person households!

Together, staff and students can help to reduce energy consumption. For this reason, the Energy and Environment department at LUH has launched this year''s campaign "Silent night at LUH - switch off and unwind over the Christmas holidays". Please register your institution, workshop, institute, or yourself by sending an email to Energie-und-Umwelt@zuv.uni-hannover.de indicating that you have switched off all unnecessary devices (duration of the campaign: 20 December 2018 to 1 January 2019).

To participate, please

- switch off unnecessary devices during your absence.

- avoid using the standby mode of printers, computers, or computer monitors.

- switch off the lights in offices, kitchens, meeting rooms, and washrooms.

- unplug mobile devices such as laptops from external power supply.

- turn down the heating.

- switch off large-scale and research devices that will not be needed for experiments over the holidays.

Registered participants can win one of two gift baskets.

At LUH, numerous devices are used in teaching, research, and administration. Computers are an inherent part of everyday work. However, a computer workstation consumes an average of 130 kilowatt hours every year. This may not sound like a lot, but it adds up considering the large number of computers used in the entire university network - quickly accumulating to an enormous consumption and generating significant costs.
