Uncrewed Aircraft Systems for Operational Meteorology

This presentation explores the innovative application of uncrewed aircraft systems (UAS) in enhancing numerical weather prediction (NWP) models. With the growing demand for accurate and timely weather forecasts, UAS offer a unique solution through their ability to collect high-resolution atmospheric data in real-time. We will discuss the integration of UAS into existing observational networks, highlighting their advantages over traditional meteorological instruments, such as increased flexibility, cost-effectiveness, the capability to access hard-to-reach areas, and minimised ecological impact. The presentation will showcase studies demonstrating how UAS data can improve model initialisation and boundary conditions. Additionally, we will address the challenges and future directions for UAS deployment in meteorology, including technological advancements, data assimilation techniques, and regulatory considerations. Ultimately, this presentation aims to underscore the transformative potential of UAS in advancing NWP.
