For a short time, the building at Am Hohen Ufer 6 was home to the humanities and social science institutes of Technische Hochschule Hannover. It was built in 1963 by the Hannover tram company and designed by Dieter Oesterlen. In 1965, the departments “German Literature and Language”, “Social Sciences” and “Political Science” moved from the Welfenschloss into the ÜSTRA building. While the latter moved out again shortly afterwards, the History Department and the Philosophy Department were added.

The first courses taught by the well-known literary scholar Hans Mayer, who had just emigrated from the GDR, took place in the building at Am Hohen Ufer. With the completion of the multi-purpose building at Schneiderberg 50 in 1970, several institutes moved there from the ÜSTRA building. Others moved into the Welfenschloss.
