Mission Statement: Good Teaching at Leibniz University Hannover

Leibniz University Hannover is committed to the concept of research and teaching as an entity. The university is driven by its mission to uphold high academic standards in teaching and learning and aims to qualify students for national and international employment markets, as well as to promote junior researchers. Outstanding teaching at Leibniz University Hannover includes insights from research and practice and enables students to gain both intercultural and general transferable skills relevant to their studies and professional fields.

Leibniz University Hannover offers students a broad spectrum of challenging degree programmes subject to regular quality assurance checks. A fundamental prerequisite for appealing degree programmes is a consistently high level of quality in teaching, which Leibniz University Hannover defines as enabling students to think and work independently based on the respective scientific standards of their subject in order to prepare them for the complexity of their future professional lives. In addition to adequate teaching and learning infrastructures, this requires attentive teaching staff with outstanding professional expertise, didactic and methodical skills, personal commitment and enthusiasm as well as clearly structured programmes indicating intended learning outcomes, which illustrate both the overall context of the field and interdisciplinary aspects. Defining intended learning outcomes requires specific and adequate approaches to teaching as well as suitable and valid examination formats.

Bachelor's degree programmes provide students with sound academic knowledge. With regard to postgraduate education, discipline-oriented and varied degree programmes open up a broad spectrum of career prospects, whereas more specialised and partly interdisciplinary degree programmes provide opportunities for pursuing advanced fields of study closely related to key research areas of Leibniz University Hannover.

In this respect, promoting junior researchers is of great importance at Leibniz University Hannover. As a central coordination and service facility for young researchers, the Graduate Academy provides a framework for acquiring interdisciplinary skills in order to meet this commitment. To promote the professional skills of its graduates, LUH focuses on internationalisation of teaching and learning as specified in the internationalisation strategy. With regard to lifelong learning, Leibniz University Hannover promotes various further education formats subject to regular quality assurance checks.

Leibniz University Hannover is committed to safeguarding equality in education on all levels of teaching and learning as well as to address heterogeneity and diversity in teaching and learning in a targeted approach. The university defines the purpose of academic teaching as reflecting on challenges and issues related to society as a whole in order to qualify students academically and inspire conscientious citizens capable of assuming social responsibility.
