Ph.D. Position in the field of Ecosystem Services – Natural Capital Accounting in EU Member States

(Salary Scale 13 TV-L, 50 %)

The Institute of Physical Geography and Landscape Ecology invites applications for a Ph.D. Position in the field of Ecosystem Services – Natural Capital Accounting in EU Member States (Salary Scale 13 TV-L, 50 %) starting February 1st, 2019. The position is limited for 3.5 years.


We are looking for a highly motivated scientist to help with the establishment of Natural Capital Accounting (NCA) in the EU Member States. NCA will be based on the "System of Environmental Economic Accounting - Experimental Ecosystem Accounting (SEEA-EEA)" and is carried out in the context of the EU Biodiversity Strategy (i.e. Action 5 of Target 2 of the Strategy, Mapping and Assessment of Ecosystems and their Services MAES). The work will take place within the new EU Horizon 2020 joint project MAIA (Mapping and Assessment for Integrated Ecosystem Accounting) in cooperation with 17 European consortium partners. The work at Leibniz Universität Hannover takes place primarily in the MAIA Work Package "Testing, piloting and mainstreaming NCA in European countries" and in cooperation with scientists, national authorities and statistical offices in the EU member states. The possibility to derive a Ph.D. thesis within above-mentioned research fields and in selected case studies is given.

Employment qualifications

Required is an academic degree (Master) in related disciplines (e.g. environmental economy, geography, environmental or landscape sciences, economy, landscape ecology, landscape or environmental planning or agricultural sciences) and solid English language skills. Additionally we expect methodological knowledge (e.g. statistics, data analysis, GIS), in the best case experience with SEEA-EEA, and the ability and motivation for transdisciplinary international project work.
