Presenting your research internationally: Impactful participation in international scientific conferences

Scientific progress depends on the written and spoken distribution of ideas and on regular exchange between researchers. Presenting your research at scientific conferences offers you an opportunity to make a meaningful contribution to ongoing discussions in the field and to furthering your career. Furthermore, presenting internationally extends your scholarly and professional reach, as well as your network opportunities. How can you optimise your scientific presentation skills in English and in international contexts and get the most out of this opportunity to participate in the discourse in your field?

This two-day training offers you the possibility to reflect on these questions, discover and practice your unique strengths as a scientific presenter and learn impactful verbal communication strategies for academic and professional settings.

Following input and exercises on wording, structuring and using visual aids in presentations, participants will prepare and give presentations. The presentations will be filmed, and each presenter will get feedback from the trainer and the other participants in a safe and supportive atmosphere. Each presenter will also be guided to reflect on their own performance and be given strategies to continue developing their presentations skills beyond the training.

Key topics:

  • the function of scientific presentations and how to fully utilise it
  • finding the right words and images for your ideas
  • using the power of storytelling and other structuring techniques
  • guiding the audience through your presentation and keeping their attention
  • using PowerPoint wisely
  • using nonverbal and paraverbal strategies to increase impact
  • staying calm, collected and focused
