Short Description
Chemistry is offered as a teaching subject (or supplementary teaching subject) within the degree programme Master’s Teacher Training Course for Technical Education. As a first subject, a vocational subject must be studied.
Chemistry is life! Chemistry is a dynamic, exciting subject. Chemistry is everywhere around us – from the production of new materials to understanding biological systems, from the food we eat to the medication that keeps us healthy, from the quality of our drinking water to keeping the air we breathe clean.
The master''s programme for teaching at vocational schools primarily trains future teachers who want to teach this exciting subject professionally and with motivation in vocational schools. Building on the B.Sc. programme in Technical Education, the theoretical training is completed by the subject Physical Chemistry. In addition, students can improve their practical skills in a subject of their choice (Inorganic, Organic or Physical Chemistry).
In addition, the subject didactics of chemistry takes a wider space and provides a good in-depth insight into all facets of "teaching and learning" for the subject of chemistry. In particular, major challenges such as heterogeneous learning groups or digitally supported learning are addressed.

The degree programme is divided into the chosen vocational subject area, worth 42 credit points, the teaching subject, worth 28 credit points, and Vocational and Business Education, worth 30 credit points. The degree programme concludes with a written (Master’s) thesis worth 20 credit points.
In accordance with Annex 5 of the Ordinance on Master’s Degrees for Teacher Training in Lower Saxony (Nds. MasterVO-Lehr), students without a relevant vocational qualification must instead complete 52 weeks of practical training before registering their Master’s thesis.
Students who choose English and Spanish as their teaching subjects must spend a three-month study-relevant period abroad.
Subject-specific knowledge of Latin must be proven for the teaching subject of Catholic Religious Education.
In order to enter the teacher profession, students should have an interest in studying the vocational subject area and the teaching subject, and should enjoy interacting with people; they should also have good communication and organisational skills, and the ability to self-reflect and engage in structured thinking.
Completion of the Master’s Teacher Training Course for Technical Education is the prerequisite for applying for the preparatory phase of teacher training for technical education. Applicants should be interested in teaching at vocational schools since this degree programme is tailored towards this career goal.
