Advising and Support at Leibniz University Hannover

Studying is a challenge for many students. At Leibniz University Hannover there are several services and units that can help with small and big problems:

The path of concern

Communication between all levels

Whatever the issue at hand, centralised and decentralised departments can share expertise and refer to each other. The following diagram provides guidance on which questions are best answered at which level and where support from other departments can be sought.

  • Level 1: Faculty, degree programme or lecturer

The first point of contact for all kinds of student concerns is located in the faculties and the Leibniz School of Education, usually in the form of academic advisory services. These services deal in particular with everyday standard concerns directly related to the degree programme or faculty. Exceptional enquiries and complaints are handled at the level of the dean of studies offices

In addition to faculty contact points, student concerns of all kinds are addressed by the student bodies and through student representatives on faculty committees.

    Examples

    Problems, questions or complaints...

    •  ... relating to courses or examinations: teaching staff
    •  ... relating to degree programmes or faculties: academic advisory services
    •  ... of any kind relating to studies and teaching: student bodies / student representatives
    •  ... relating to studies and teaching at the faculty: dean of studies offices
  • Level 2: Central academic facilities

On the second level, central services can be used. These include, for example, the Central Student Advisory Services, the Admissions Office or, for international students, the International Office. These services generally deal with general questions about studying and the organisation of studies.

Special counselling services such as the Equal Opportunities Office or the Psychological and Therapeutic Counselling Service for Students provide assistance with specific and extraordinary issues and complement the range of services on offer.

On the student side, the students' union is available to provide advice.

    Examples

  • Level 3: Ombudsperson for Studies and Teaching

The third level is the central point of contact, the ombuds office with the ombudsperson for studies and teaching. This is where extraordinary concerns and complaints are dealt with that cannot or can no longer be dealt with at the previous levels.
