You study at a different university of the network in the 2nd and 3rd semester. The 1st semester and the master thesis in the 4th semester are completed at the home university.
Short Description
International networks are becoming increasingly important for aspiring landscape architects. Studying abroad provides the opportunity to learn about working methods and cultures at other universities, to make international friends and to strengthen subject networks – also beyond one’s studies.
With the “European Master in Landscape Architecture (EMiLA)”, five of the leading European universities have created a joint master’s programme in Landscape Architecture. Members of the network are:
- The University of Edinburgh / Edinburgh College of Art
- the École Nationale Supérieure de Paysage Versailles / Marseilles
- Amsterdam University of the Arts / Amsterdam Academy of Architecture
- Universitat Polytècnica de Catalunya/Escola Tècnica Superior d'Arquitectura de Barcelona
- and Leibniz Universität Hannover.
The curriculum of EMiLA addresses the internationalisation of European planning culture and enables students to develop expertise and generate knowledge of very different national contexts. EMiLA students take part in the design projects and courses offered by the master’s programme in Landscape Architecture. Here, aesthetic and social-science approaches are combined with scientific and technical insights to tackle the complex challenges of our time, from both spatial and design aspects.
The curriculum agreed between the universities is embedded in the existing master''s programme Landscape architecture at the Leibniz Universität Hannover.
On the final certificate for the M.Sc. Landscape architecture, the specialization "European Master in Landscape Architecture (EMiLA)" will be included.

EMiLA is an academic and practically-relevant degree course based on design principles. Students study at three European university locations.
The first semester of the two-year course takes place in Hannover. The next two semesters are spent abroad at two out of four locations named above, after which the master’s thesis is written in Hannover.
Special features of the course are the two modules developed specifically for EMiLA: the eLearning module “EU policies on large-scale territorial changes” and the annual “EMiLA Summer School” ensure that all current EMiLA students from the five partner universities work together in both a digital and a physical location.
An essential feature of the degree programme is project work. In intensively supervised small groups, students work independently over the course of one semester on complex real-life problems and research topics. This provides intensive training both in self-management and the ability to work in a team, as well as in visual and presentation techniques.

- Visual, written and oral communication skills on the topic of landscape architecture
- Proficient use of CAD, image processing and other computer programs
Graduates are qualified to work in a variety of positions in planning offices, in the public sector or as independent service providers. The European specialization opens up the option to seek employment worldwide.
In addition, graduates are qualified to embark on a doctorate.
Admission Requirements
Please note that an application folder must be submitted for the application in addition to the regular application documents. The application folder includes a motivation letter as well as work samples (DIN A4 format).
For master''s degree programmes with restricted admission, places shall be allocated according to the university’s own selection procedure, if there are more applicants fulfilling the admission requirements than there are places available. The exact admission requirements can be found on the website of the master programme:

First-year students from Germany and the EU
- June 1st – July 15th of the year for the winter semester
- December 1st – January 15th of the year for the summer semester
First-year students from non-EU countries (VPD from uni-assist is required)
- April 15th – May 31st of the year for the winter semester
- October 15th – November 30th of the previous year for the summer semester
Students resuming their studies and transfer students from Germany and the EU (application in a higher semester)
- June 1st – July 15th of the year for the winter semester
- December 1st – January 15th of the year for the summer semester

The application for EMiLA is made jointly with the application for the M.Sc. Landscape Architecture.
