Short Description
What effects do decisions of the European Central Bank have? What methods can be used to combat unemployment? How should the balance sheets of international corporations be read? These are just some of the issues addressed in Economics and Business Administration. Economics involves supplying people with the goods and services they require in the context of scarce resources; organising labour; planning social security; distributing tax burdens; and managing national economies or international growth processes.
Economists play a role in addressing current and future challenges facing businesses, public administration and organisations from the perspective of microeconomics and macroeconomics. Due to the wide-ranging interplay of economic processes, consideration must also be taken of environmental, social, psychological, political, legal and technological perspectives. Owing to such variety, economics and business administration opens up exceptionally differentiated and exciting research and employment prospects.
Students who opt for the areas of Empirical Economics and Econometrics, Finance, Banking & Insurance, Information and Operations Management, International Environment and Development Studies or Strategic Management can take the entire programme in English.

No later than six weeks before the end of the lecture period of the first semester, students choose two areas from a total of eight: a major area, worth 50 credit points, and a minor area, worth 20 credit points. Up until six weeks before the end of the lecture period of the second semester, students still have the option of swapping their major and minor areas. Students also take an optional area, worth 20 credit points. This involves either taking modules from any of the eight areas or studying abroad, which is recognised for a set amount of credit points (mobility window).
Six months are set aside for the Master’s thesis, worth 30 credit points, which must be registered before the start of the fourth semester.
A mobility window for a semester abroad, involving the recognition a set amount of credit points worth a maximum of 20 credit points, enables students to spend either the first, second or third semester abroad as an integral part of the programme. The faculty’s International Office has extensive experience in sending students abroad, and has signed cooperation agreements with more than 40 international partner universities.
Applicants should have a head for figures, and should be able to analyse and combine information. Since business processes are shaped by people, students also require good social and communication skills. Applicants should possess the professional skills taught at the Bachelor’s stage, as well as initial skills for producing scientific work.
Graduates of the degree programme in Economics and Business Administration are qualified as versatile and self-reliant problem solvers. The programme is the foundation for all kinds of careers in management, whether in industrial or commercial enterprises, with banks or insurance companies, in tax consultancy or auditing. Public administration, associations and the media also provide a wealth of employment opportunities for graduates in Economics and Business Administration.
