Award Ceremony for Social Commitment and Academic Performance of International Students

Three International students honoured by DAAD and Leibniz University Hannover on 10 December 2019

On Tuesday 10 December 2019 at 7 p.m., an award ceremony was held by Leibniz University Hannover at Leibnizhaus (Holzmarkt 4-5, 30159 Hannover) to present the DAAD award and the university awards by the Victor Rizkallah Foundation and Leibniz Universitätsgesellschaft Hannover e. V. In recognition of their exceptional social commitment – both at the university and beyond – international students were also awarded for their outstanding academic achievements.

Three international students from Leibniz University Hannover were honoured:

Ms Marija Rosic born 24 February 1994 in Serbia.

Master's degree student in Production and Logistics

Ms Marija Rosic was nominated for the DAAD award as well as for further university awards by Dr. Maren Kandulla and Dr. Volker Domeyer from the Centre for Quality Enhancement in Teaching and Learning (ZQS).

She has studied Production and Logistics at Leibniz University Hannover since 2013, first as a bachelor’s degree and since October 2017 as a master’s degree.

In addition to a demanding degree programme and substantial occupation, Marija Rosic also participated in two qualification programmes at LUH as well as completing two placements.

Furthermore, Ms Rosic spontaneously and emphatically provides support to fellow students at the institute and beyond. In particular, she is of invaluable assistance to international students encountering everyday challenges. For example, in 2013 she helped a school pupil visiting from China extend her visa, in 2014/2015 she mentored an international mechanical engineering student who she provided support with everyday university life, visa extension and with finding a job. Moreover, international students are regularly welcomed to sleep on her couch for a couple of days or more whilst looking for somewhere to stay. In addition, she also helps international master’s students find accommodation, making the first days in Hannover and of university life significantly easier.

Ms Marija Rosic was presented the DAAD award, which includes award money amounting to €1,000.

Mr Kire Jovanov born 31 May 1992 in North Macedonia

Doctoral candidate in European Law - in particular European Commercial Law - at the Faculty of Law

Mr Jovanov was nominated for the DAAD award as well as further university awards by Prof. Claas Friedrich Germelmann.

Mr Jovanov stood out almost immediately due to his profound knowledge and innovative approach to problem solving, not to mention his outstanding academic performance landing him a position as one of the top students in the degree programme. Following an obligatory period abroad, which Mr Jovanov completed with great success at the University of Lisbon, he wrote a master's thesis on the European banking union, in which he demonstrated his ability to conduct sound research and participate in profound academic discussion.

In September 2018, Mr Jovanov became a doctoral candidate at the Faculty of Law, where he is working on a complex, interdisciplinary topic within the field of European business law. In this respect, he has - through his own initiative - participated in various international conferences and events, and on a number of occasions has been invited to lecture at such conferences and events. A further academic exchange is already planned with a colleague in Copenhagen. Furthermore, in December he will appear as a panellist at one of the events by the institutes in collaboration with the Faculty of Law’s international Erasmus network, to discuss the challenges with regard to further education and qualification in law within Europe.

Moreover, his social and interdisciplinary commitment is remarkable. His participation in this year’s European Law Moot Court, where he reinforced the team of the Faculty of Law is particularly noteworthy. In school and during his studies in North Macedonia he was socially involved in various projects. Among other things, he was involved in school self-government and was a member of an NGO as well as a political party in his home country. More recently, his commitment within the faculty includes a lecturing position in cooperation with the Institute of International Law. Through the course “Introduction to Academic Writing”, he has successfully assisted international master's degree students with backgrounds in various different legal systems in questions concerning citation, literature research and the rules that apply to good scientific practice. This highly demanding task demands immense responsibility and strong commitment.

Moreover, Mr Jovanov’s engagement in the initiative “gemeinsamfuer.eu” should be highlighted. Among other things, the initiative organised projects in relation to the 2019 European Parliament elections. His ongoing involvement includes follow-up activities in collaboration with EIZ (Europäisches Informationszentrum) in Hannover. This all clearly illustrates how important social, civic and political commitment, and particularly a European mind-set are to Mr Jovanov.

Mr
Kire Jovanov was presented the university award by the Victor Rizkallah Foundation, which includes award money amounting to €500.

Mr Michal Jakub Musialowski born 16 March 1988 in Poland

Master's degree student in Advanced Anglophone Studies in the English Department

Mr Musialowski was nominated by Prof. Dr. Ruth Mayer from the Faculty of Humanities.

From 2017/18 to summer 2019, Michal Musialowski completed an international, English-taught master's degree in “Advanced Anglophone Studies” in the English Department, recently graduating with an outstanding mark. Furthermore, from the beginning of his studies, Michal Musialowski has devoted himself with great vigour to the extracurricular aspects of the course and the department. Since spring 2017, he has worked as a student advisor for master’s degree students; from summer 2018 he contributed significantly to the development and implementation of the Welcome Desk of the Faculty of Humanities. Founded together with other students, he coordinates the international student group “@homeabroad” for the master’s degree in Advanced Anglophone Studies. Earlier in 2019, Michal Musialowski and two other students received the Leibniz University Hannover Campus Culture Award for their engagement in this project.

In spring 2019, Mr Musialowski successfully applied for a research stay at Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida University in Lapai, Nigeria where he conducted research for his master's thesis on contemporary Nigerian poetry. The research project was funded via a PROMOS grant. In Lapai, Michal Musialowski worked together with Prof. Sule Emmanuel Egya, who is a professor in African literature, an expert in the field of poetry research, and a poet. Following his period abroad, Mr Musialowski completed his master's thesis and oral examination, graduating in the summer with an overall mark of 1.3. Subsequently, he undertook a lecturing position at Oldenburg University in September 2019 and intends to write a doctoral thesis on the same subject as his master's thesis.

Michal Musialowski is an exceptionally attentive and intrigued student, whose enthusiasm is extremely infectious and who has made a lasting impression in seminars. Mr Musialowski enjoys complex texts and problems, both his oral contributions and his written work demonstrate that he is a particularly keen student. He is an eloquent speaker and has a broad range of knowledge, which he uses confidently.

In his role as tutor, he acts on his own initiative, has a natural instinct for anticipating questions, and is a quick and reliable worker – a perfect choice for the position. A high proportion of students enrolled in the master’s degree programme are from the Middle East (many are refugees from Syria, Iraq or Iran), from China, or from Eastern Europe. Mr Musialowski independently created a small handbook for new students, concisely answering important questions on commencing studies. His duties as a student advisor inspired him - together with other students - to ensure newcomers have a point of contact by forming the international student group "@homeabroad". The name speaks for itself. The group explores the city and its culture. One highlight in winter semester 2018/19 was an evening featuring an exhibition by Syrian photographer Adnan Arbaji, including theatre, readings from self-written texts, music and homemade food. Both international and local students thoroughly enjoyed the evening. Michal Musialowski coordinated and supervised organisational tasks; he is the motivating and inspiring force behind the scenes of the project.

Mr Michal Jakub Musialowski was presented the university award by the International Office, which includes award money amounting to €500.
