The Joint Lab Data Science & Open Knowledge explores new ways to access information in large databases

What is the optimal way to search in large databases in the internet, in libraries or archives? How can distributed information be better connected and information flows between organisations be organised smoothly? These and further questions on the topics of Data Science and Open Knowledge will in future be addressed by scientists of the Joint Lab Data Science & Open Knowledge.

In the recently set up laboratory, the TIB, and Research Centre L3S, which is based at Leibniz Universität Hannover, will be working in the following areas:

  • Digital Libraries
  • Visual Analytics
  • Open Science
  • Information Retrieval, Web Science und Web Archives
  • Data Mining
  • Human-Computer Interaction

Head of the Joint Lab is Prof. Dr. Sören Auer, Director of TIB and incumbent of the Chair in Data Science & Digital Libraries at Leibniz Universität Hannover. Prof. Dr. Wolfgang Nejdl, Director of the Research Centre L3S, is the scientific spokesman for Leibniz Universität. "The good working relationship between Leibniz Universität and TIB will continue to grow and gain strength through this cooperation," says Prof. Dr. Volker Epping, President of Leibniz Universität Hannover.

In the Joint Lab we are strengthening the interplay between the pure research of L3S and the applied research of TIB," says Prof. Dr. Sören Auer. One example of this is machine learning methods for analysing picture and video data developed at L3S that are now being used to capture more precisely the content of the more than 10,000 videos from TIB's AV portal. The log-term goal of the Joint Lab is to develop methods that make it possible to support the work of researchers in science and industry in the digital world. Apart from traditional publications in document form, videos, research data, software or graphs increasingly have to be taken into account.

"TIB and L3S have been working together successfully as partners for many years. The Joint Lab provides the opportunity to further pool our research expertise through close networking and to do research into pioneering topics," Prof. Dr. Wolfgang Nejdl from L3S confirms.
